5 Fun Facts about Jewellery you probably didn't know

Knowing fun (and sometimes… weird) facts about jewellery can be a great conversation starter that will educate and impress your listeners.

So we went ahead and found 5 fun facts about jewellery you probably didn't know.

1. Greek culture

Jewellery was considered an integral part of everyday lives of men and women in ancient Greece. It symbolized wealth, status, and most importantly - religious devotion. That’s why ancient Greek jewellery often featured animals, mythological creatures and gods. Not your style? Let’s see if you can find something that suits you more. Click here to shop.

2. Unconventional materials

Materials run out, but fashion never sleeps. That’s why modern jewellery artists are experimenting with other materials like rubber, paper and plastic, showing off the advancement of technology and design.

But that’s not the only side of creativity when it comes to jewellery-crafting. There are also records of people using rather “weird” materials for it. Here are a few examples:

  • Hair
  • Meteorite
  • Teeth
  • Animal bones
  • Chocolate

Yes, you read right. Luckily, we prefer more “old-fashioned” ways here at SAAR.

3. Space

It is pretty common for astronauts to bring jewellery to space. Karen Nyberg, for example, is an astronaut who famously wore a necklace made by her son while aboard the space station. So if you ever decide to go to space - make sure to take a piece of SAAR with you! Click here to shop.

4. Oldest jewellery

Crafted over 100,000 years ago, the oldest piece of jewellery was discovered in South Africa. Supposedly, it was a necklace or a bracelet as it was made from shells and pierced with holes. Don’t worry though - our jewellery is a bit more modern. Click here to shop.

5. Hidden message

Some pieces of acrostic jewellery contain secret symbols that are only known to the wearer or the giver. Sometimes, each gemstone’s name is used to spell out the first letter of a word, creating a secret message. Check out SAAR’s latest engraving, can you find a hidden message there?
